Serendipity in Art

It is great to let go of the control-freak inside (well, sometimes).  I was prepping some paper ready for painting and just love what happened here.

What I am trying to achieve is a sense of perspective in this painting.  You have to imagine it upside down for this, I wanted texture of cracks and creases, with finer ones in the distance (top of the painting) and I wanted harder, larger ones in the foreground (bottom of the painting), so I used tissue for the finer ones and dug out an old fax roll for the harder creases.

Pleased with that aspect of the work, I then applied some lettering through a stencil using texture paste.  Now, texture paste takes ages to dry and I am impatient, I wanted to get started asap, so I blasted it with the hairdryer.  (sidenote here, I have managed to blow out one hairdryer in six months by using it in the studio, but it was an old one).

As I moved the hairdryer over the lettering, I noticed that the fax paper was beginning to darken, even after I stopped.

I thought it looked rather interesting like this, but even so, I will be painting over it.  At least I know how to achieve this effect if I ever want to!

I am learning something new here. Waiting to see how the painting looks like.

What I love about art is that I never stop learning. It will be more colourful when it is finished, of that I am certain!

This is freaking BRILLIANT. It is a snowy landscape- that was my first impression, even down to the textures and highlights in the snow.

Thanks Jessica - don't you just love it when things just "happen"?

what does the text say??

I actually really like this the way it is, reminds me of a cold snowy night, but I know it is destined to be colourful :)

Thanks Jennifer, you are the second to see the snow. The text is from a book on palmistry, just a wee excerpt that is about life-lines and business.

ah OK :) Used to read people's palms, but stopped after I freaked this women out

That is the nice thing with working with arts...one can always find new things to create beautiful things. You made an awesome work here:)

Thanks Joy, yes it is such fun to find possibilities in the strangest of places and things.

Ooh, Jennifer - how freaky!

its a shame because I really enjoyed doing it, but didn't like how scared she was and didn't want to freak anymore people out, so stopped. been thinking of reading up on palmistry again and starting to read palms when people ask..makes a nice party trick, jk :p

Oh yes, that would be good - perhaps leave anything out that might scare people, just stick to the light stuff.

My son used to be a wonder with tarot cards, but he stopped because they were so accurate and it freaked him out.

I learned something new by making a mistake the other day and I was thrilled! I was working in Photoshop, and somehow I hit the wrong key. Took me a while to figure out what I had done, but now I know a new trick :)
Love the look of this, and I can't wait to see if any of it shows under the paint. Enjoy Rolina!

Rolina, you are so incredibly talented. You work so hard at your craft that it's no surprise that even this 'happy accident' is a success. By the way, from the thumbnail I thought it was a snow scene. I look forward to and enjoy all of your posts.

Thanks so much Linda, Sue, April, Kathy, Sheila and Sharon, we learn more from our mistakes than our successes, I do feel.

Haven't you been having fun, in your mad scientist creator experimental mode. Love the effects, and that you know how to get them now! :D
