Day 19 - Sewn Collage

8"x8" on Watercolour Paper
Thinking back to my theme of "boundaries", I reflected that some of the boundaries in the landscape are caused by natural elements, such as mountains, rivers and the coastline.

Today's painting needed some horizontal lines, so I tore papers and fabric into thin strips and sewed them to the painted/collaged surface. I knocked back some areas to the right and that gives a good contrast to the left-hand side.

I love all the frayed edges in this piece.

Somehow I have a very calm feeling when I look at this painting although there is a lot going on.
I went to walk to one forest yesterday and your painting reminds me of that forest (I went to check out one available house there) and there was a river too. Beautiful textures.

Thanks Andersson Blue, I think horizontal lines are calming and the colour blue (which I am very fond of). Your walk sounds lovely!

Thanks Sue, I am glad you are teaching such great techniques to other students, they will love it, I am sure.

I'm beginning to see why you were attracted to my paintings and why I'm attracted to yours. When I studied this one just now, it was so odd because I was just thinking to myself that I would do an "aerial" view map of Sanger for the next painting (or more) and that I might sew paper or fabric onto my WC paper! And here you are, stitching on a "map". I often do pieces that are somehow "gridded" and map like, usually as seen from above. I have been studying a few more of your works each day and immensely enjoying the process!

Thanks Jennifer, I really enjoyed sewing them (although I am slightly scared of my sewing machine)!

It is a bit unpredictable and seems to have a mind of it's own, Jennifer, but we are getting to know each other gradually!

Thanks for visiting my blog Kathleen! Your work hit me in the guts, it felt so perfect for me. I love your idea of doing an aerial view of Sanger and the sewing - maybe you can use maps too!

I love this with the applied material with frayed edges and stitching. So soothing and inspiring, Roilina.
